Running and cycling events for 2017

2017 is starting and I have set a goal for myself to run the comrades for the first time in June 2017.they are other events I will be doing throughout the year as preparation for the comrade’s marathon. As my love for fitness and helping the community at large I have been in talks with several people I trust and that has led me to do a challenge to help Newcastle with the unemployment buy setting up an accountability program where unemployment graduates or young people can acquire skills especially in information technology and fitness. I will be travelling from Newcastle to cape town for 16 days(each day I will be doing 100km ) My main aim is raise funds for my accountable program .

    Cooking classes and hiking programs

    • Vulintaba hiking day

    • Healthy food cooking classes

My passion is health and fitness, teaching and showing people that you don’t need to be at the gym to be fit but by incorporating daily things to be fit like cycle to work or parking further from the mall entrance. My other passion is volunteering (giving my time to a worthy organisation) thereby fundraising for such cause. I have decided to have a fundraising initiative to set up an accountability program for unemployment people, graduates  and small business people.A place where these individuals can meet with experienced individuals within the Amajuba district to share knowledge and teach about basic skills within the accountable program. The accountability program will be a place where each individual will set a goal he/she want to attain and the group will assist in whatever goal setup.

The accountability program will comprise of two computers, printer, an internet modem and a book exchange program for its individuals .I am pleading with the Newcastle municipality, majuba municipalities and private companies to support this endeavour so that people who are unemployed will not be sitting at home but have somewhere  that can go to contribute in Newcastle because our main aim will be to volunteer within Newcastle community to gain work experience and hopefully gain employment or have a small business.

I have decided I am going to cycle from Newcastle to Cape Town in 16 days covering between 60km to 100 km a day and stopping in various towns along the way and would appreciate a sponsorship or donation from companies or individuals to donate or sponsor equipment that will make the accountability program possible

    Possible items to be donated

    1. A place where the accountability program will be held
    2. Internet (Telkom MiFi, Wi-Fi)
    3. Two desktops
    4. Two desks

Gyms VS Physical activity

As a personal trainer,Our main focus is to help clients achieve their  desirable goals in terms of health and fitness.A personal job or work can be in a gym or training people at their homes, the main focus of the job is to keep the client enjoying their workout and achieving their result. But how does a trainer achieve that, when a client has so many things in his/her life to do.For example let take a mother for instances, she works from 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday and she still needs to come back home cook for her husband and family, help the kids with the home work, some house chores and other things the household needs to do and yet she hopes that one day she can change her figure (you know her weight before marriage).can she ever find time to workout in the gym or find time in the day for her. This has been on my mind a lot these days,I may assist a lot of women shed weight in the gym which is good but am i doing my job/work properly, for instances I should try to understand their lifestyle back at home before i can even attempt drawing up a workout routine because If I just do a workout routine that will make my client too tired/sore the next day I may lose her because she may not do her job properly, her household chores, and all the other relevant things a woman should do in her life. This has made me more humble, patient and more understanding to my client as  much I disciplined myself and trained more than everyone else I do not have the added pressure of a family behind me,kids or a wife. I fully appreciate and respect women  who have found  time to go to the gym and workout.Gyms should be more appealing to women clientele or family like having a section for kids while the parents are working out, gyms Should have a place for laundry/dry cleaning services for busy working moms to bring their clothes to be washed.Other services a gym should have that are family oriented-car wash service, cafe(internet services, books)salon, spa.I personal think gyms should be in a community area where everyone has an access to it and its should not be a place where people who can only afford a gym membership can enter because health is very important to everyone and we all need to healthy. The community needs to find creative ways to be fit and gyms needs to find creative ways to target other members of the community to be fit like changing membership (off peak and peak members),Having their fitness instructors do classes in community halls, churches or let them participate in marathons to encourage community members to be more active, fitness instructors should be more visible in the community like having initiative to promote health and fitness for example running a marathon to help an orphanage or something. My ultimate goal as a personal trainer is to develop a workout regime you can do anywhere weather its in the gym, hotel or at home as I believe being health and fit does not need a membership card.So as the month of august is starting today I want to wish all the women in my life and in the my community and country and everywhere in the world happy women month. On the 9th august 2016 I will be  participating in the memel marathon for a 50km race.

my day so far personal trainer

Today I woke up as usual around 4am and head to the gym to train my client from 5am.one thing that was strange about today is the way i converse with one of my clients, let start with 6am client she loves training outdoors and love running and swears by it but her diet routine are awful to say at least so we ran for a few minutes and thought to myself let me be creative for once so i told her we a were going to try something new today and we went to the park we did bootcamp she loved it.it got me thinking that most people do not want to be bothered by gym contracts, boring sales staff or i said personal trainers in the gym or any other staff in the gym people want something they can be engage in for at least 40 to 60 minutes and be fun.By 8am I was talking to other client of mine she was also battling with her diet and was very frustrated, after we finished our training we actually had an unplanned talk where I actual told her about my struggle on weigh loss issues and bad habits in my wellness life and i finally realize the more you let a person in the better they understand you and your role you trying to achieve with them.being a personal trainer is not about being fit only its about having the information with you and letting your client and yourself walk the same journey they beginning as you have done it yourself.I personal think personal trainers should walk their life meaning you cannot have a big gut if you are a personal trainer or have bad habits because you are advocating a healthier lifestyle.time to make a choice now if this is for a long time or a short time.for me its my new lifestyle and I love it

Personal training

In school I was not sporty at all,You can ask any of my friends about me being sporty.I remember this other day in school we were having those sporting days which usually we ran cross country event I remember my mom shouting at me that the other boy is passing,I think that was me being sporty in school, other than that I joined a gumboot dance in school and it certainly did not help me that i had a computer science certificate in grade 12,so all in all I was not destined for a career in personal training.

After I finished my matric in 200o,mt goal was to do IT which it failed because I did not have the marks to do that course,So I decided to do the next available course which was sport management.I remember very well the first year I failed not because It was difficult but because I thought it did not challenge that was a wake call for me to repeat another(same subjects, same lectures all year)I passed a few subjects. As a student in RES you always toyed with the idea of having a few (alcohol) and smoking.I think I started smoking then.During my four years in technikon I had a stint in the gym ranging from coaching the girls soccer and helping the netball side in school. In my last year of the sport management we were suppose to do 6 coaching course and 900 experiential training hours that was difficult for me to do,so We had done three coaching course during our study(athletic, wheel chair basket and soccer).I decided to do a spinning course with elsa storm as my lecture it was awesome that lady knew everything.I then did a sport massage course and a certificate in exercise with fitpro which meant i had fulfilled my 6 course and for 900 hours I went back home in newactive health and fitness to do them.

With all of that I was not fulfilled i just did it as to finished my course sport management.I finished my course in 2004 .I was still young then so I decided to apply for a visa in the United kingdom where I got a job in Blackpool as a leisure assistance in De vere hotel.I had a blast,I remember my first night out there let just say it was a disaster the security personnel wanted to kick me out (was too drunk).

In 2007 I came back to south africa back in newactive gym as fitness instructor where i tried to apply to many jobs and enventually got a job in virgin active Durban as a personal trainer.I had a lovely year there but with all good and bad things it had to end i spent at least a year then i went to johannesburg working in sunninghill virgin active as a lifestyle consultant and a group fitness instructor,i thoroughly enjoyed it,until i burnout and could not do any fitness classes because i was working too much and partying too much(drinking and smoking)I gave up and went back home again in newactive and work very little there until I completely gave up the fitness game and change to study IT.

In 2011 to 2013 enrolled for course in information technology and completed it.During my studies i gained weight from 72kg to 98kg (I blame the student life). In 2013 I decided I needed to lose weight so I joined the gym in umhlanga I went for 5 days when I check my scale I gained another 5kg,which i told the sales consultant lady to cancels my contracts as i felt the gym was a waste of time I still smoked and drank.i manage to lose 15kg by then by walking around the flat for at 60 minutes and doing  the women’s health magazines dvd. I even did a trail run(15) in umhlanga.

I went back home and i stay at home not wanting to come back to the gym because I did not have confidence to come back, everyone had seen me fat,i was very shy.how can i be a fitness instructor who smoke  and drink every weekend which i kept it on.I came back in the gym and again I assisted a lot of people with my skills.

2016,February I decided to quit booze and cigarettes (almost 10 years I’ve been smoking, which now I have not smoked nor drunk alcohol and i am following a healthier eating plan.My goals for now is to be the best personal trainer out there and actually living the healthier lifestyle and being a role model in the health and fitness industry and telling people if I can quit smoking anyone can it was not easy. I’ve just done my first cycle race yesterday 105km from Newcastle to lady smith..At the moment I want to use my skills both in information technology and fitness to promote a healthy lifestyle for all.

Show Me Your Friends and I’ll Show You Your Future

tom.basson

I recently read an article that convinced me that in the next five years a person will become a conglomerate of the people they hang out with. Perhaps you’ve heard this before?

You become over time the average of your five closest friends.

The article said that more important than food and exercise, more important than what we read or what we watch on television, our friends are the most influential force in determining the kind of people we will become. In other words, hang out with cynics and you’ll become a cynic. Hang out with cheaters and you’ll become one, too. On the other hand, hang out with people who are wise in relationships and you’ll soon find yourself a social ninja.

Friends love you at your worst and can help you be your best, but I think many of us don’t realise the importance of whom we choose…

A story of hope

Sitting at Grace Family Church, having a cup of tea before the service was a normal weekly routine. Except on Sunday the 16th of February, a lady named Precious, changed something.
Meeting 25 year old Precious, you’d see her as a happy, healthy lady, someone who enjoys the simplicity of things. She greeted my friends and I with a simple sentence, “You don’t understand how happy I am for this tea!” We’re very open to meeting new people and started a friendly conversation with her. While in this conversation, we discovered a few details of her life which we never, ever expected..
She is HIV positive.
Her mom had a stroke and she has to look after her.
She has a 9 month old baby.
She doesn’t have a…
